There are times when people are overcome with emotion. Typically, it is one emotion, but it can be many.
Recently I have been experimenting with emotional complexity. I have tried to invite other emotions in after fully feeling what’s present. For instance, as anxiety is dying down, I may invite some peace into the back of my heart. Or, if I am feeling frustration, I may invite some softness and a little compassion.
When emotions arise, you don’t have to choose. You are allowed to feel them all, to let ones go when you are ready, and you can definitely invite something in if you feel called. Feeling what’s there first helps, and getting familiar with the emotions or frequencies you want is also helpful. You can do the latter by practicing just feeling these, even when you don’t fully feel them but just to allow them to start to ask questions like- What would it be like if I could invite some more of this in? Could I feel the way this enters me? Where do I notice it in my body?
When a situation arises, you can choose to feel everything that’s there. You can feel it all, even when it’s complex. From there, you start to let emotions or frequencies alchemize. Once you can invite peace into sadness, something transformative happens. Imagining them mixing in different parts of your body helps. Then, the peace starts to soften and dissolve the sadness. The dominant emotion or frequency, the one that is closer to higher emotions and frequencies will help to diminish the lower. This is a very natural process that helps an emotion completes its course, which shouldn’t typically last longer than 90 seconds. This is why practice helps!
Take a deep breath. Feel fully grounded, present and here. Know that you have the ability to stack emotions or frequencies and even if you haven’t practiced yet but took this in, it is already a part of you. You won’t have to think about it as much: your nervous system will do most of the heavy lifting. From here you can begin to adapt more fluidly without being defined by a single emotion.
Blending, understanding, becoming. This is the way 🙂
